Case Study: Internal repaint of Catholic Church

Our Lady of Victories Catholic Church of the Glenelg Catholic Parish is located in the heart of Glenelg and is a religious home for many followers of the Catholic faith.

The interior of this religious building, while architecturally beautiful, was plagued with several issues. Our Adelaide team was engaged to provide an overhaul to the existing coating system.

Before

The challenge

At our first on-site inspection, we identified several areas of concern. The internal elevation of the Western wall was significantly damaged due to years of water ingress. Although external repointing had been conducted years earlier, the interior plasterwork was in a state of disrepair. A complete painting overhaul was required to restore life into these substrates.

The height and size of the surfaces, as well as the need to remain operational throughout the project, also provided an additional challenge. It was evident that a carefully curated operations plan was required to ensure the project was completed on time and with minimal disruption.

Solution

In close consultation with the facility’s committee, we identified the required scope of works, access requirements and a methodology that would mitigate risk and minimise disruption to the church’s operations. We tailored a multi-year plan that enabled the church to have a full repaint completed in year one, with painting maintenance to follow for several more years.

Before commencing the repaint project, we engaged a colour consultant and provided the committee with three alternative colour scheme options. The committee reviewed the colour overlays we provided and determined the appropriate colour scheme for their property. The preferred scheme was subtly different to the existing paintwork and would help to contemporise the building.

As works were set to commence, COVID-19 restrictions were implemented, which meant places of worship within South Australia were temporarily closed. This enabled our operations team to be the only people occupying the facility, outside of Father John Herd who continued performing his sermons online. As evidenced by the photos, we utilised fixed scaffolding to access the surfaces and were able to complete the repaint project on-time and in budget.

Results

We were thrilled to have complete this high-quality repaint project over eight weeks and received accolades from the committee. After signing the project off, Father John personally thanked all our operatives on-site by taking them out to lunch. We look forward to continuing the relationship with Glenelg Catholic Parish with several more years of painting maintenance.

"Just wanted to convey our sincere and deep thanks for the splendid work on the painting of OLOV Church and all of the additional jobs uncovered as the project unfolded. The Higgins team were excellent at their trade, their attention to detail, as well as friendly, courteous, cooperative, and welcoming of Finance Council members and other tradespeople when necessary. Our thanks too for so efficiently and effectively dealing with the unknowns as the project progressed and for accommodating our additional requests. We would love to welcome anyone from your team who worked on this project to visit OLOV when Covid-19 restrictions are lifted in the future. Thank you for making OLOV Church look so very beautiful and we look forward to our on-going maintenance agreement arrangements. Very well done, Team Higgins!"
