Theodore Primary School in the Australian Capital Territory featured several external surfaces presenting as tired and in need of revitalisation.

ACT Property Group procured our Canberra team to perform the repaint, after a successful tender bid.

The challenge

The educational facility required a focused external repaint, targeting high-traffic areas subjected to considerable attention from pedestrians. The school's yellow steelwork had become faded and devoid of life. Reviving the school’s exterior was a requirement for the project, however it was not the main difficulty our operations team had to overcome.

Rather, it was access challenges that required the most planning from our operations team. Sections of the school, particularly the top-level fascia, were difficult to access due to numerous trees, awning walkways throughout the school, and soft ground grassed areas. 

Solution

Our Canberra team has extensive experience managing commercial painting projects featuring unique access conditions. For Theodore Primary School, we utilised several pieces of machinery to ensure safe and effective access, including scissor lifts and rough terrain knuckle booms. This ensured all work was delivered in line with safe work method statements and risk assessments.

Our operations team wet-scraped flaking portions of paint, before applying an oil-based undercoat and two topcoats of acrylic paint. The operational delivery of the project was completed during school holiday breaks to avoid disruption and ensure the safety of children.

Results

Our operatives completed the works within the school’s budget, with nominated surfaces receiving two coats rather than three where surfaces presented in good condition due to greater protection from the elements. The repaint has helped to brighten up the school, particularly near the entrance, which was a pain point for the customer. The repaint was finished within the desired timeframe in time for children to safely return, and to a high-quality standard that the customer is happy with.
